QQQM vs QQQ: the fee split, and how to buy one share
Both are Invesco Nasdaq-100 ETFs. QQQM is 0.15%, QQQ is 0.18%, and one QQQM share is about half the price. Long holds usually look at QQQM; the tape and options
What this is
QQQ and QQQM are both Invesco ETFs that track the Nasdaq-100. That index is the largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. It is heavy in technology. It is not a total-market fund.
The holdings are nearly the same basket. The live differences are the fee, the share price, and how deep the trading is. Invesco states QQQ’s total expense ratio as 0.18%. The trust launched on 10 March 1999. QQQM is the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF at 0.15%, listed 13 October 2020. ETF.com’s late-August 2026 comparison put QQQ around $489 billion in assets and QQQM around $104 billion. One QQQM share has recently traded at roughly half a QQQ share.
This walk-through puts that split in one table, then buys one share two ways: Interactive Brokers and Schwab thinkorswim. The screenshots are from a public tutorial. Some account figures are already masked. Menus move. Your live app wins.
Before you start
- You need a brokerage that can trade US-listed ETFs, funded in US dollars.
- Confirm the ticker is QQQM, not an options contract. Schwab search often dumps a list of
.QQQMoptions first. Open the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF line. In IBKR, pick Stock, not Options. - The expense ratio comes out of NAV each day. You do not get a separate invoice. Three basis points matter over a long hold. For a round-trip trade, the spread usually dwarfs the fee gap.
- Dividends on a US-listed ETF are withheld for non-US tax residents. Taiwan residents commonly see 30%. Mainland China residents who have a valid W-8BEN on file are often treated under the US–China treaty. Your 1099 and the broker’s tax page win.
- The Nasdaq-100 excludes financials. Do not treat QQQM as a VOO / SPY core. Holdings follow Invesco’s QQQ holdings page and the live QQQM product page.
- Limit prices in the screenshots (250, 290) are the original author’s demo, not a target. A limit well below the market will sit unfilled.
Steps
1. QQQM vs QQQ in one table
| | QQQM | QQQ | |--|------|-----| | Name | Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF | Invesco QQQ Trust | | Issuer | Invesco | Invesco | | Index | Nasdaq-100 | Nasdaq-100 | | Inception | 13 Oct 2020 | 10 Mar 1999 | | Expense ratio | 0.15% | 0.18% | | Distributions | Quarterly | Quarterly | | Share price | About half of QQQ | Higher | | Size and tape | Large, still thinner than QQQ | One of the most traded US ETFs (Invesco: 2nd by average daily volume as of 30 Jun 2026) | | Typical use | Long hold, smaller tickets | Active trading, options |
Top names rotate with the quarterly rebalance. Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Broadcom, and Meta show up often. Do not freeze an old top-10 list.
Public comparisons usually point long-term, low-turnover holders to QQQM. If you need the tightest spread or the options chain, QQQ is still the main market.
2. Buy one share on IBKR
Open the IBKR app. Tap the search magnifying glass at the bottom.

Type QQQM. Confirm INVESCO NASDAQ 100 ETF on NASDAQ, then Stock, not Options.

On the quote page, confirm the ticker is still QQQM, then Buy.

On Buy Order, keep quantity at 1 if that is the test. Limit is optional. Time in force can be day or Good-Til-Canceled. Check the limit against cash, then Preview or Slide To Buy.

A typical confirmation is Your order is pending. A limit away from the market stays working. Tap Done.

Open Orders and read it again: QQQM, Buy, size, limit, still working.

3. Schwab thinkorswim
Open thinkorswim. Tap Trade at the bottom. For a Schwab International account, W-8BEN, and wires, see the site guides on opening, W-8BEN, and funding.

Search QQQM. Open the Invesco NASDAQ 100 ETF line. Skip the .QQQM option rows.

Side Buy. Order type Limit, duration GTC, then the limit and share count (demo: 1). Check Cost of Trade against cash, then Review.

Confirm BUY +1 QQQM and the total. Send.

To see working orders: More at the bottom right, then Orders.

Working should show QQQM, BUY. Fills leave Working.

4. Common questions
You can dollar-cost average QQQM if the broker supports a recurring buy, or if you place a monthly order yourself. A lower fee and a smaller share price make the ticket easier. They do not promise a return.
QQQM is not the whole US market. It is closer to a Nasdaq non-financial top-100 growth sleeve. A broader core is a different product (VOO, IVV, SPY, VT and the like).
Before you send, reread the fee and the ticker on the broker page or on Invesco. Fees, holdings, and distributions move.

Carddoger take
Same Nasdaq-100, two Invesco wrappers. QQQM is the cheaper share and the cheaper fee if you mostly sit. QQQ is the older, deeper book if you trade or write options. Three basis points will not save a wrong ticker or a limit that never trades.
Pick the account you already have. On IBKR or Schwab, open the stock/ETF line for QQQM, then match limit, size, and cash. Mainland tax residents should get W-8BEN right before arguing about dividend withholding.
Fees, AUM, and holdings follow Invesco and your broker that day. This is a public product note plus a click-path. It is not investment advice.
