What this is

Charles Schwab is a listed US broker, ticker SCHW. After TD Ameritrade folded in, new international accounts go through Schwab. Online listed stocks and ETFs are written as $0 commission.

This walkthrough is for a mainland China tax resident opening an Individual Account from inside China. The international open-account page lists China as an eligible residence. Review can still bounce you for a translation or extra papers. Community notes from mainland applicants in 2026 are not gentle. Start at Charles Schwab International. This follows the international open-account page, the document notes for China residents, the IRS W-8BEN page, and public SIPC language. Older international rules often had a $25,000 funding floor. Schwab is a FINRA and SEC member. Securities accounts have SIPC cover. The usual figure is up to $500,000 in securities per customer. That is a liquidation backstop. Market losses are not in it. A walk-in shop in San Francisco does not mean your application will pass.

Before you start

Get the papers ready, then tap Open an Account. Back buttons and long idle pages can loop, and the name field can stick. Some people find Safari smoother than Chrome.

What to have

1. A valid passport. Name follows the English on the passport. Keep pinyin in line with your FX bank account. The international site has said China residents can also send a national ID plus a residence-permit type paper. If you have a passport, use the passport.
2. Proof of residential address. The same file must show your name and the address. Utility bills and bank statements are the usual ones. Chinese bills sometimes get a request for an English translation. Mobile bills and credit-card statements are shaky in community notes. Do not lean on those.
3. An email that can take verification codes.
4. Your own mainland phone for identity checks. Country code is +86.
5. An English address. Split street, district, and city in pinyin. Postcode is 6 digits.

The address has to match the proof you upload later. Schwab may send paper mail. You need to be able to receive it there.

Employment and source of funds follow the truth. People with a job often put General purposes as the account purpose, and Salary, wages, or savings as the source. Money figures go in US dollars. Total assets above liquid assets, liquid assets above annual income, is how brokers usually read the form. Trading experience follows what you have actually done. Do not invent years or trade counts to look stronger.

Steps

1. Pick the country and Individual

On the international site, tap Open an Account at the top right. Scroll to Get started by choosing your country/region of residence. Pick China. The page will jump once. That is normal.

Then pick Individual Account and Continue. The next screen reminds you that an international account needs a non-US residential address, a passport, and address proof. Notes about the old funding floor sit near this block. Read it, tap Get started, then check I agree on the disclosure page.

2. English personal details

From here, English and numbers only. Name follows the passport. Nationality is China. Do not poke the back button.

3. User ID and password

User ID is at least 6 characters, at least 1 letter, no special symbols. Password is at least 8 characters, letters and numbers, no leading or trailing spaces. Security-hint answers are at least 5 characters, no special symbols.

4. English residential address

Country is China. Split street, district, and city in pinyin. Pasting one long block often overruns the field. City is the city pinyin. Postal code is the 6-digit postcode. A third street line can stay empty. Whether mailing matches residence depends on whether you can receive mail at that address.

5. Employment

Employed, Self Employed, Student, Homemaker, Retired, Not Employed. If you work, put the company address in English and split the lines the same way. Freelancers can put a studio or a prior employer, if you can support it.

6. Securities-related questions

The form asks if you are a director, if you own about 10% or more, and if you work in the securities industry. Ordinary retail clients pick No. A wrong check usually means a support call to fix it.

7. Paperless

Statements, trade confirms, and tax forms default to electronic delivery. Continue.

8. Account features and options level

The page asks about Margin and Options trading. Take margin and options only if you will use them. If you are unsure, community notes often start at Long (Level 1) so you send fewer extra papers later. Covered is Level 0. Spreads and Short Uncovered sit closer to short-term trading. Long-only holders usually do not need them.

9. Finances and experience

Figures in US dollars. A story that adds up matters more than a pretty number. Stock and options familiarity follows the truth.

10. Review and terms

Each block has Edit at the top left. The terms page is often English. Read it, then check the boxes.

11. Upload ID

Passport photo page plus signature page, and the address proof. File names in English. Chinese file names can fail the upload. Wait until the bar hits 100%. If a Chinese bank statement is rejected, send a translation the way support asks.

A completion screen only means the application went out. Live status follows the email. Some people get Your application is approved, then file W-8BEN the next day. Some can log in while the email still says the account is not approved. A wire in that window can bounce and you still pay the wire fee.

Do not pile the tax form and the wire onto the same day as the application.
