Wiring dollars into Schwab, memo, fees, and arrival notes

What this is
The usual path into Schwab for a mainland client is a USD wire. First a foreign-currency account, then RMB to USD, then USD to the Schwab receiving number they give you.
This follows the international wire instructions on Schwab’s money-transfer page and SAFE’s public personal FX rules. Bank name, SWIFT, account number, and memo are copied only from that Schwab page. Do not type them from memory.
Before you go
The account must be allowed to take funds. A welcome letter that says you cannot fund your account will bounce the wire. You still lose the fee.
Bring the national ID. Some branches also want the bank card and a USB token. Declare purpose the way the bank asks that day. Do not invent a story that does not match the facts.
The sender name must match the English name on the Schwab account. If passport order and the bank pinyin disagree, ask the bank and Schwab support first.
Third-party accounts do not land. Family accounts and company accounts bounce when the name does not match.
The old USD 25,000 community floor is gone. Some support agents still recite it. Your account page wins.
Mainland individuals have an annual FX convenience quota. The public figure is USD 50,000 equivalent per person per year. Inside the quota you use the national ID at the bank. Above it you add current-account or capital-account papers as the rules require. The quota is a calendar year. Unused amount does not roll. SAFE and the bank that day win.
Branch and online banking
BOC, CMB, ICBC and other large banks can send a USD wire. The first time, a teller can copy the Schwab page. Some banks also do it in web or mobile banking. Paths differ. Missing the button in the app does not mean the FX account failed. Try the desktop site.
You can convert in batches over time, or convert on the wire day. Neither path is required.
How to copy the memo
Log into Schwab. Open Transfers, then Transfer numbers and direct deposit. You can switch to Simplified Chinese before login.

Select the Individual account. Scroll to international (USD) wire instructions.

The popup lists bank name, address, SWIFT, account number, and account name. The final beneficiary line is your name plus the Schwab account number. That string goes in the wire memo. A missing piece can bounce the funds.

Fill in English at the branch. You can also prefill on the bank site. The content matches the paper form.
Fees
The sending bank charges a wire fee, plus possible correspondent cuts. Each bank’s sheet is different. Use that day’s receipt. A tiny wire makes the fee look large. There is no official minimum. Quota, fees, and arrival days come from your own bank table.
Carddoger take
Approval first, then FX, then the wire. Copy only from the Schwab page. Third-party names and funding before approval are the usual bounce reasons. Rates and the FX quota follow the bank and SAFE that day.
