Asiana leaves Star Alliance on 16 Dec 2026. What to do with award tickets already issued

What happened

Asiana Airlines (OZ) posted that it will leave Star Alliance at 23:59 Korea Standard Time on 16 December 2026. That step sits in front of the Korean Air merger and a single combined network. Asiana joined Star in 2003. After exit, alliance identity follows the merger onto the SkyTeam side.

Why it is leaving

The official FAQ is short. Exit is because of the coming merger with Korean Air and a combined airline network. Asiana stays in Star through 16 December 2026, the day before integration. After that, passengers sit in Korean Air-led SkyTeam benefits.

Korean Air is already SkyTeam. One merged carrier cannot keep both Star and SkyTeam badges for long. Asiana leaving Star is a required merger step.

Dates that matter

These lines matter most if you use Asiana miles, Star awards, or transpacific business and first.

1. 16 December 2026, 23:59 Korea time. Asiana leaves Star Alliance.

1. Departures on or before 15 October 2026. Asiana Club miles still accrue the usual way (member number at booking, ticketing, or check-in). If a flight does not post, retro credit is generally through 31 October 2026. Asiana-operated flights credited into other Star programs follow the same 15 October departure cut on the alliance side, with retro often through 31 October. Each partner can tighten that. Use that program's rules.

1. Departures from 16 October through 16 December 2026. Credit into Asiana Club no longer posts automatically. You have to claim after the trip under a process Asiana will publish separately. Auto-load of the member number at booking or check-in shuts off.

1. Asiana miles used for Star partner tickets or upgrades. Ticketing cutoffs and travel windows differ by operating airline. United, Air China, Air Canada, Shenzhen, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, TAP, and a similar group are listed around 16 December 2026 Korea time. Some carriers show travel windows out to 16 December 2027. 1. Elite benefits. Asiana Club elite lounge, priority check-in, extra bags, and other Star Gold-style partner benefits last through flights departing on or before 16 December 2026. The notice also says Diamond and above with Star Gold will move to the matching SkyTeam Elite Plus after the switch, with no official gap. Titles and benefits after merger follow Korean Air / SkyTeam.

1. Miles already on the account. Asiana Club balances earned on Star flights, and their expiry, are not zeroed by the exit.

Star awards already issued for travel after exit

This is the line that needs action now.

Asiana FAQ Q7 says if you already used Asiana miles for a Star partner award, and travel falls on 17 December 2026 or later, those tickets stop working after exit. You cannot board the original itinerary even if a ticket was issued.

Official advice is to call Asiana reservations, check the PNR, and talk through cancel or a change. Tickets that cannot be used because of the exit can be fully refunded with miles returned, no penalty.

The notice also says that even inside an allowed travel window, an issued Star award can still be cancelled before departure because of the operating carrier's policy. If that happens, full refund and miles back as well.

If you hold an Asiana-mile Star trip that crosses the night of 16 December, call or use web support now. Do not wait until the week of travel.

Cash tickets and Asiana-operated flights after the Korean Air combination are a separate operations topic (flight numbers, check-in desks, ticket stock). That is not the same as Star awards failing because of the alliance exit. Later passenger notices from both airlines cover those operational changes.

What this does to Star transpacific awards

Alliance membership is an admin result. For frequent flyers it slowly closes one award door.

Transpacific Star business has been tight. United and Air Canada are stingy with partner business. Air China space is thin. EVA and ANA often sit behind partner blocks or inventory policy. Asiana's business product has a decent reputation and was less blocked for many programs, so search-it-ticket-it windows showed up more often. After it leaves, Star-side transpacific business gets a bit narrower.

After the merger, the Asiana brand folds into Korean Air. Korean Air miles are already harder to source in the US (Chase UR and Marriott transfer paths have moved over time), and business inventory leans in-house. If you still hold Korean Air miles, the window keeps shrinking. Korean Air's live site wins before you spend them.

What to check now

1. Pull email and the Asiana account. List every Asiana-mile Star trip with travel after 16 December 2026.
2. Match the Q6 table for that operating airline's ticketing and travel cutoff.
3. Travel on 17 December or later. Call Asiana reservations about a change or a free refund of the ticket and miles.
4. Star flights still to fly by 15 October. Confirm the member number at check-in, then watch posting.
5. Flights from 16 October through 16 December. Watch Asiana's later separate accrual claim note. Do not assume auto-credit.
6. Diamond and above. Watch mail or the app for SkyTeam Elite Plus after the merger.
