What happened

American Express Blue Cash Preferred (BCP) is a personal cash-back card people use for US grocery. The public product page now uses an as high as $300 welcome. The tier you see when you apply can differ. Trust the offer that lands on your account.

Amex Blue Cash Preferred

Welcome offer

Common official copy is as high as $300 cash back, often after $3,000 spend in the first 6 months. The same page says welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer.

Same card, different links and different profiles, different dollar amounts. After approval, the offer written on the account is the one that pays. Do not budget as if everyone gets $300.

Annual fee

$95, $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. The annual fee usually does not count toward the welcome spend.

Ongoing cash back (US, terms win)

  • US supermarkets 6% cash back on the first $6,000 each calendar year, then usually 1%
  • Select US streaming 6%
  • Gas and transit (taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses, and similar listed items) 3%
  • Everything else 1%

On Amex's supermarket definition, Walmart, Target, and Costco usually sit outside the 6% grocery bucket and earn 1%. 6% and 3% categories are generally US-only. The card has a foreign transaction fee. Using it outside the US is usually a bad rate.

Disney streaming credit

Product benefits often include a Disney Streaming Credit. Common copy is pay a US subscription at DisneyPlus.com, Hulu.com, or Plus.espn.com, up to about $10 a month (around $120 a year). Site list, monthly cap, and whether a purchase is required that month follow current terms.

Other items

  • Amex Offers at participating merchants
  • Refer a friend. Successful referrals can pay the referrer, with a calendar-year cap on your invite page

Same-family apply notes

Amex personal welcome bonuses are usually once per card for life. Family rules can also let higher-fee BCP affect the lower-fee Blue Cash Everyday (BCE) welcome. If you want both, community order is BCE first, then BCP. Space the two applications by about 90 days or Amex may cancel one. How many Amex cards you can hold, and how many approvals in 90 days, still follow Amex and that week's underwriting.

Product-change path. Community often treats BCE as the no-annual-fee sibling if you drop BCP.

Carddoger take

BCP's long-run story is US supermarket 6% (yearly cap), streaming 6%, gas and transit 3%, a waived first-year fee, and an as-high-as cash welcome. Public copy often sits near $300 / $3k / 6 months. Because it is an as-high-as structure, the application page is the number that matters.

Supermarket definition, streaming list, and Disney credit sites move. Walmart, Target, and Costco usually miss 6%. Foreign transaction fee. Weak as an overseas daily card.
