What happened

One Mile at a Time reports that American Airlines will change complimentary elite waitlist upgrades on North America flights that sell Premium Economy. Many travelers will read it as a cut. It only hits a small set of aircraft and routes.

From 25 Aug 2026, as of that report:

  • Every AAdvantage elite tier can waitlist into Premium Economy when a qualifying seat is open
  • Clearing still follows elite windows, in the same spirit as today’s business waitlist
  • American had not formally offered complimentary elite upgrades into PE as its own step

PE today sits mainly on Boeing 777 and 787 widebodies and Airbus A321XLR. The write-up puts the affected set near nine routes, including some Hawaii widebody flying and transcon premium routes on the XLR such as JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO.

The paired change is the double upgrade.

| Booked cabin | Old logic (three-cabin jet with PE) | New logic (from 25 Aug 2026) | | ------------ | ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------- | | Economy | Could waitlist to business (skip PE) | Waitlist to PE only | | Premium Economy | Waitlist to business | Still waitlist to business |

On economy / PE / business metal, complimentary elite upgrades become one cabin. Economy no longer jumps two cabins into business by default.

The report is also clear about what does not move:

  1. North America domestic flights with no PE cabin (most of the network) keep today’s upgrade rules.
  2. Complimentary elite upgrades outside North America stay as they are.
  3. PE seats sold as Main Cabin Extra on some short hops, not as PE, stay as they are.

Paths that can still skip a cabin:

  • A systemwide upgrade and similar products can still move economy over PE into business, if that certificate’s rules allow it
  • If you buy or use miles for an instant move into PE, you can still waitlist to business under the usual rules

Carddoger take

On routes where PE is sold as its own cabin, American is making complimentary elite upgrades one step. Economy goes to PE. PE goes to business. Economy to business as a free double upgrade goes away. Few routes are in scope. Elites on JFK transcons and some Hawaii widebodies will feel it.

If you mostly fly narrowbodies with no PE, little changes soon.

If you often fly XLR transcon or PE Hawaii metal, gambling economy into business gets harder. People who pay to lock PE may see a thinner business waitlist.

Systemwide certificates and paid instant upgrades remain the skip-a-cabin tools. Do not assume a free double upgrade is still there.

American and AAdvantage official upgrade pages win. The “about nine routes” figure is a media count at one moment. Fleets and routes move.
