HSBC is closing Australian retail banking and selling the loan book

HSBC Australia will exit retail banking. The home and personal loan book is under a sale agreement to Blackstone, about AUD 36 billion book value. Pepper Money

What happened

HSBC Bank Australia said it will leave local retail banking. The site’s Important Notices and a 31 Jul 2026 release say retail will wind down in stages over about 18 months. The home and personal loan book is being sold separately.

| Item | Detail | | ---- | ------ | | Sale | Australian home loans plus personal loans | | Book size | About AUD 36 billion (about USD 25 billion) | | Buyer | Blackstone | | Servicer | Pepper Money expected from H1 2027 | | Condition | Regulatory approval still required |

Important Notices says the same. HSBC and Pepper will work together so the handoff is as smooth as they can make it. Home and personal loan customers also got 31 Jul 2026 materials and an FAQ.

Retail outside that loan book winds down in stages over about 18 months. The list includes:

  • Transaction accounts
  • Savings and term deposits
  • Credit cards
  • Foreign-currency accounts
  • Wealth and investment products

The site banner says you can no longer apply for new products and services. New retail applications are closed.

HSBC also said it will keep investing in Australian wholesale, commercial, private bank, and asset management lines. Those sit beside the retail exit.

Official points for current customers:

  1. No immediate action is required.
  2. Existing products and Premier, if you have it, keep running on current terms for now.
  3. Over coming weeks and months, product-level mail will explain each book’s move.
  4. Loan customers can use Pepper Money’s HSBC page and HSBC’s loan FAQ.

Close dates, rate or contract changes, and card benefits follow formal letters and the account page. Do not treat a news summary as the contract.

Carddoger take

This is a full retail exit in Australia, not a product tweak. The loan book sells first (Blackstone buys, Pepper services). Other retail accounts and cards wind down over about a year and a half. New accounts are already closed.

If you have an HSBC Australia home or personal loan, watch approval progress and the H1 2027 Pepper servicing switch.

If you have day-to-day accounts, deposits, cards, or investments, leave time to move. Wait for product mail. Do not close in a rush on the headline alone.

If you still wanted a new HSBC Australia retail account, that window is shut.

If you use Premier cross-border perks, watch later letters for global linkage and transfer rails.

HSBC Australia official notices, product contracts, and regulatory filings win. This is the site notice plus the 31 Jul 2026 release. It is not a move or investment recommendation.
