What happened

Bank of America’s cobrand with Spirit Airlines, the Free Spirit Travel More World Elite Mastercard, stopped being an apply product after Spirit’s shutdown around May 2026. It is now a wind-down for people who still hold it.

US Credit Card Guide updated the card page in July 2026. The card is closed. BoA is mailing holders that the account will convert to a BoA Customized Cash credit card. USA TODAY and others reported that the issuer takes no new applications, existing accounts still work, and spend usually stops earning miles once the frequent-flyer program is effectively dead.

| Item | Public notes (guide plus media) | | ---- | ------------------------------- | | Card | Free Spirit Travel More World Elite Mastercard (BoA) | | Status | No new applications, treated as closed | | Trigger | Spirit stopped flying. Miles and most airline perks lost their home | | Bank action | Mail. Automatic conversion to BoA Customized Cash | | Transition offer | Not uniform. Some saw about $250. Some saw extra 2% back through 30 Sep (guide citing DoC). Use your own mail |

This is not an optional product upgrade. The cobrand partner disappeared, so the product line is being moved. How it hits your credit report, whether the limit moves over, and how the fee cycle is counted all sit in BoA’s letter and account page.

Customized Cash Rewards is a BoA cash-back line. Categories are chosen and fixed. Free Spirit miles and companion vouchers do not travel with it. If this card existed to earn Spirit miles:

  1. Mile perks are effectively over. If the program cannot run, more spend will not produce tickets.
  2. The number and credit line may continue as a cash-back card for everyday spend.
  3. Extra 2% for a limited time, or a fixed-dollar offer, is a conversion sweetener. Watch the end date (such as 30 Sep) and any enrollment step.

Historical product notes on the guide page, for background only. You cannot apply.

  • Welcome offers had included 50k / 60k / 65k Spirit miles plus a $100 companion voucher, often after about $1,000 in 90 days.
  • Fee about $79, often $0 year one. No foreign transaction fee.
  • 3x Spirit, 2x dining and grocery, 1x else. $5,000 yearly spend had also unlocked a companion voucher.

Those bonuses and the mile game have no new-apply value. The live question is conversion terms plus any transition cash back.

Checklist:

  1. Search mail for Bank of America, Free Spirit, product conversion.
  2. Write down the conversion date, any reply needed, and the full transition offer.
  3. Log into BoA. Check the new product name, limit, fee cycle, and APR.
  4. If you still have Spirit points or certificates, match them to the latest airline and bank notices. Most paths are already thin.
  5. If you do not need the line, you can review a normal close after conversion. Watch remaining fees and credit-file effects.

Carddoger take

The Free Spirit cobrand is over. Airline stops, card closed to new apps, BoA moves leftover accounts onto Customized Cash. If you still hold it, the useful facts are the conversion date in the mail and whether that letter includes limited cash back or a fixed offer.

Transition perks vary. Use your BoA mail. Do not assume everyone gets $250 or extra 2% on all spend.

After conversion, judge it as a cash-back card. If you do not need the line, close through the normal process. Closed-to-new does not mean you must cancel today.

You cannot apply for this cobrand anymore. Historical welcome figures above are background only.
