What happened

Walmart said on 21 August 2026 that tap to pay will start on 24 August at select U.S. Walmart stores and Sam's Club locations. The company plans to have it in all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, and at fuel stations by mid-2027.

U.S. Walmart had kept NFC off for years. This is the first time the retailer has put tap-to-pay cards, phones, and watches on the official checkout list. The post talks about an eligible contactless card, phone, or smartwatch. It does not name Apple Pay. Google posted the same day that Google Pay is coming to those stores. A Walmart spokesperson told Business Insider the list includes Apple Pay and Google Pay. MacRumors also names Samsung Pay, plus physical contactless credit and debit cards.

The contactless option most U.S. shoppers already had was Walmart Pay: open the app and scan a QR code on the PIN pad. Walmart's own help page still says that flow does not use NFC. The new post frames tap to pay as another choice, not a replacement. Cash, cards, and Walmart Pay stay. Sam's Club members can still use Scan & Go and skip the regular line.

Walmart also said eligible Walmart, Sam's Club, and OnePay cards can be added to digital wallets and tapped from there.

Google's blog matches the same calendar: select U.S. Walmart and Sam's Club stores next week, all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026, fuel by mid-2027. The instruction is to add a card to Google Wallet and tap Google Pay.

Bloomberg treated the story as Walmart finally taking Apple Pay, and tied it to easier checkout. MacRumors notes that Home Depot, Lowe's, Kroger, and H-E-B already turned tap on in recent years, and calls U.S. Walmart one of the last big holdouts. The same piece says Canadian Walmart stores have taken Apple Pay since 2020. The Walmart post does not mention Mexico.

Carddoger take

This is NFC turning on in U.S. stores. It is not a new Walmart wallet. QR Walmart Pay stays. Scan & Go stays.

24 August is select stores only. Fuel is later. Look for the contactless mark on the terminal. Do not assume every Walmart can take a tap that day.

A physical contactless card should work under the official wording, without the Walmart app. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and watches follow the same rule: the card has to be in the wallet, and that register has to be live.

Walmart's post, the terminal in front of you, and the wallet app win. This is the 21 August company note plus Google's blog, Bloomberg, Business Insider, and MacRumors. It is not spending or investment advice.
