What transferable points are, and how people earn them

Transferable points sit in a bank or platform pool, then move to airline and hotel programs. This page separates them from cobrand miles, names Amex, Chase, Cit

What this is

Transferable points are a bank or platform currency you can send to more than one airline or hotel program. They are not the same as a cobrand card that dumps spend straight into AAdvantage or United MileagePlus.

Flexibility is the product. The same balance can wait, compare, take a transfer bonus, or leave a program that just devalued. Partner lists and ratios move. Each issuer and each transfer page is the live table.

Transferable currencies

Before you start

  • Most programs want an annual-fee card that unlocks transfers, or they give a better ratio if you hold one.
  • Transfers usually cannot be undone. Confirm space, a room, the ratio, and any bonus before you send.
  • Cobrand airline and hotel cards still pay for bags, lounges, and companion awards. You do not have to pick only one style.
  • This is a explainer, not apply or redeem advice.

Steps

1. Split transferable points from cobrand miles

Transferable points are earned on a card or portal, then sent to a set of loyalty programs. They are not locked to one airline.

  • An AA cobrand mostly feeds AAdvantage. You redeem around American and partners. If AA is expensive, you pay it or you build another pile.
  • A Citi ThankYou card that transfers (Strata Elite / Premier and similar, product page wins) can move 1:1 to AA when you hold the right card, and can also move to Flying Blue, Virgin Flying Club, KrisFlyer, Choice, LifeMiles, and other partners.

That flexibility shows up in two places.

  1. Award prices differ. The same trip may be 70,000 on AA and 60,000 on a partner. You transfer 60k to the cheaper program and keep 10k.
  2. Taxes differ. Both sides want 70k, but one adds about $200 and the other about $400. The save is cash, not always miles.
Flexible award space

2. Learn the main US currencies

| Currency | Common door | Note | |------|------| | Amex Membership Rewards | Many Amex cards | Wide airline and hotel list. Some US domestic transfers may charge a fee | | Chase Ultimate Rewards | Sapphire, some Ink cards | You need a card that unlocks airline and hotel transfers | | Citi ThankYou | Strata Elite / Premier and similar | Card type changes partners and ratios | | Capital One Miles | Venture and other miles cards | Some partners are not 1:1 | | Bilt Rewards | Bilt card and related products | Many partners, plus rent-adjacent play |

Edges

  • HSBC and Barclays Arrival can transfer. Community attention is usually lower than the table above.
  • Newer piles such as Rove may come from shopping or travel portals, not a cobrand.
  • Marriott Bonvoy can send to many airlines, often about 3:1, and often adds about 5,000 airline miles per 60,000 Bonvoy. United sometimes pays more. Marriott’s current page wins.

Do not copy a full partner table here. It goes stale.

3. Why people keep a transferable pile

Room to move after a devaluation. If the points sit in one program and that program raises awards overnight, you are stuck. In a transferable pool you can still leave for a partner that prices better today.

Transfer bonuses. Issuers sometimes add 20% or 30% to one partner for a window. That can beat earning more of the same card.

You can wait. Book when the award is actually there. Do not transfer “just in case.”

4. How people earn them

  • Welcome offers on cards that mint the currency.
  • Category spend (travel, grocery, dining) on those cards.
  • Portals, when the math beats the card category after the extra click.
  • Mixing a no-fee earner into a premium transfer card in the same family, when the program allows it.

5. Checks before you tap transfer

  1. Award seat or hotel night is actually there for your dates.
  2. Ratio, bonus, and any transfer fee.
  3. Taxes and carrier surcharges in cash.
  4. The name on the loyalty account matches the card name.
  5. You can live with a one-way move.

Carddoger take

Transferable points are a pool with exits, not a better cobrand. Hold the card that unlocks transfers, keep cobrands for perks, and do not move points until the award exists. Official transfer pages beat any printed list.
