How to apply for a US business card as a sole prop

You do not need an LLC. Sole proprietors often put Owner in Title, pick sole prop, use SSN if there is no EIN, and read the employee-count question carefully. A

What this is

Business-card welcome bonuses are often large, so points people put them in the plan. A lot of readers hear “business card” and assume they need an LLC, a shop, or staff. Many people apply as a sole proprietorship. The business is you.

This page is how the form is usually filled, plus the edges around spend, credit, and 5/24. Issuer pages and the live application win. This is not legal, tax, or apply advice.

Before you start

  • A sole prop usually does not need a stack of filings and does not have to get an EIN first.
  • The project does not have to be profitable yet.
  • If you already have an LLC or a corporation, use that type. Do not force sole prop.
  • Personal credit still matters. Many US business cards pull a personal report.
  • Chase 5/24 can still decide the application. If you are already over 5/24, most Chase business cards are hard. A Chase business card approved under 5/24 usually does not add to 5/24.

Steps

1. Check that sole prop is the right line

In a card-app context, “business” can be wide. A side project, freelancing, or early content work is often treated as a sole prop if you treat it as something that might earn money.

Carrie has used her own early work as an example. Travel pieces that paid under $100 in total. About $5 half-hour Skype art lessons on Fiverr. No brand, site, trademark, or LLC. That shape is a sole prop.

  • You usually do not register a pile of papers first.
  • You can apply before the project earns.
  • If the legal form is already an LLC or company, say so.

2. Common form fields

Greg’s field notes are widely reused. The live page’s wording wins.

| Field | Usual sole-prop fill if you have no EIN | |------|------| | Title | Owner | | Business type | Sole proprietorship | | Business name | Your legal name is common | | Tax ID / EIN | SSN if there is no EIN. EIN if you have one | | Employees | Read whether the question includes you | | Expected income | $0 is used when there is no income yet | | Expected expenses | Some people include the welcome-offer minimum spend. That is your call |

Employee count is the easy miss. Some Chase forms ask how many employees you have besides yourself. Others include you. The same shop is off by one. Read the English.

If the page allows a DBA or trade name and you registered one, match the bank and the tax file. If not, legal name is the usual path.

3. Check yourself before submit

  • Name, SSN or EIN, and address match your ID and tax file.
  • You are not inventing an LLC you do not have.
  • You can fund the minimum spend without mixing it into a mess of personal debt.
  • If Chase is the target, count 5/24 first.

4. After you apply

Approval, a 30-day review, or a deny all happen. If they ask for documents, send what the letter lists. Do not invent revenue to look larger.

Personal and business spend can sit on the same card. The welcome-offer terms define eligible spend. Issuer agreements still want the account used for the business. Stay inside the page you accepted.

Carddoger take

Sole prop is a real apply path. Title Owner, type sole prop, SSN if there is no EIN, and a careful employee count. 5/24 and personal credit still sit in the room. The application page is the form. This is not a lawyer or a tax advisor.
