What a US digital resident setup is, a remote stack non-US people can build legally
Here, US digital resident means a remote stack you can reuse. A working US number, a residential address that takes letter mail, an ITIN (or a later bank path),
What this is
You are overseas or not yet in the US, and you still need a US-side digital stack. A mobile that can take codes, an address that can take bank letters, a tax-number path, and a fairly stable US access environment. Community shorthand for that whole set is US digital resident. It is not a visa, a green card, or an immigration status. It is a remote toolkit you can reuse.
This guide follows an order you can actually run.
- Get a US number on a real carrier or a major-network eSIM
- Set up a private residential-style address that takes letters (CMRA plus USPS 1583)
- Learn and apply for an ITIN
- Prepare a dedicated US IP
- Then apply for web services, bank or broker accounts, credit cards, and start a credit file
Policy, plan prices, account rules, and risk checks move every day. IRS, USPS, carriers, and each financial site win. This is an information note. It is not immigration, tax, account, or investment advice. It does not promise any application will pass.
Before you start
Set the right expectation
| Item | Notes | |------|------| | Goal | A remote US number, address, tax-number path, and apply environment | | What it is not | Not a US identity document. It does not replace a visa, green card, or SSN in law | | Time | Address notarization, ITIN review, accounts, and cards often take weeks to months. Do not plan as if three days will finish it | | Compliance | Real identity and papers you can prove. Fake documents, bought numbers, and account trading are illegal high-risk | | Cost | Monthly number, annual address, notary, courier, and an ITIN agent (if you use one) add up |
Materials by stage
| Stage | Common papers | |------|----------| | Mobile | eSIM-capable phone, a payment method, a US or accepted billing address (carrier rules win) | | Residential address | Passport or other ID, USPS PS Form 1583, notary / CAA or the receiver's ID check | | ITIN | Passport original or certified copy, W-7, papers for the application reason. CAA help is optional | | Bank / card | US number, address, ITIN or a passport path, US IP, income and job fields (the form that day wins) |
Risk lines to read first
- Each bank decides on its own. Same papers can pass at A and fail at B. That is normal
- ITIN is not an SSN. Do not treat it as US work status
- Address and 1583 must be a real authorization. The receiver and you both stay responsible for mail compliance
- Tax. If you have US-source income or a filing duty, talk to a qualified tax professional
- Device environment. Frequent number swaps, device hops, and public proxies raise freeze and denial odds a lot
Steps
1. Get a US mobile (cloud-friendly options)
A US number sits under later email, address services, and bank SMS. If you are outside the US and cannot walk into a store, pick on these points.
- You can open it remotely (site or agent, eSIM or a SIM you can forward)
- It runs on T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, or a real MVNO on those networks
- SMS is stable (bank OTP and 2FA. Virtual numbers fail often)
- Monthly cost can drop to keep-alive, so you do not lose the number for a missed bill
- The plan text is clear on international roaming SMS and calls (critical if you stay overseas)
#### Poor primary-number types
| Type | Examples | Why | |------|------|------| | Pure virtual | Google Voice, TextNow, and similar | Banks and brokers often refuse them, or OTP never arrives | | Short travel eSIM | Data-only packs with no stable US number | Fine for tourist data. Weak as a long-term finance line | | Unknown ready-made numbers | Used or shared numbers | Freeze, second KYC, and legal risk |
#### Directions that fit remote use better (pick one)
These are common community options for remote use. They are not an official ranking. Plan names, prices, and whether you can order from overseas move. Read the live site before you buy.
| Option | Network | Why remote users look at it | Watch | |------|------|----------------|----------| | Ultra Mobile PayGo family | T-Mobile | Lots of community notes. Monthly can go very low. SMS and light calls. International roaming comes up often | Live site and plan page win. Confirm eSIM or SIM delivery | | Tello | T-Mobile | Custom low monthly. eSIM. Remote order on the site is relatively straightforward | Confirm payment methods and activation region limits | | US Mobile | Multi-network (product lines differ) | Flexible plans, many eSIM options. Pick a network by need | Many product lines. Read Warp / GSM and roaming before checkout | | Red Pocket Mobile | Multi-network | eSIM and annual-style plans in community notes. Useful if you want to switch networks | Plan codes are messy. Pick a tier you can keep long term | | H2O Wireless | AT&T | Prepaid option when you want AT&T coverage | Check eSIM / SIM and international terms | | Mint Mobile | T-Mobile | Annual can be cheaper. Plans are easy to read | Mostly prepaid cycles. Activation and delivery follow the order | | Visible | Verizon | Simple plan, Verizon coverage | Eligibility, device, and payment follow the site. Check overseas-order limits yourself |
Quick pick
- You need codes while overseas. First check whether the plan includes international roaming SMS and calls (or a roam add-on). US local data alone is not enough
- You cannot receive a physical SIM. Prefer an eSIM line
- Tight budget, mainly keep-alive and SMS. Look at T-Mobile MVNOs with a custom low monthly (Tello or PayGo style)
- You want network fallback. US Mobile and Red Pocket give more network choice
#### Official sites (compare the live plans yourself)
Ultra Mobile Tello US Mobile Red Pocket H2O Wireless Mint Mobile Visible T-Mobile
#### Open and keep the number
- Before order. Phone unlocked, eSIM supported (check Settings), payment works
- Right after activate. Receive one SMS, call voicemail or support once. If you are overseas, test OTP while roaming
- System. Set this US line as the default SMS line so codes do not land on the wrong SIM
- Keep-alive. Pick a tier you can drop later. Set a renew reminder. A missed bill often kills the number
- Stay put. Do not swap the primary number every month. A new number means rebinding every bank and 2FA
- Safety. Do not forward codes to an unknown third party. Do not buy or sell KYC numbers
Carriers do not publish one promise that overseas customers can always open. The same product can change. If the site cannot finish ID or payment, switch to another option in the table. Do not buy a ready-made number from an unknown source.
2. Register a US private residential address that takes letters
After the number, you need an address that can receive letter mail, not a warehouse that only takes parcels.
#### Forwarding warehouse vs residential / CMRA
| Type | Common use | Bank / letter mail | |------|----------|------------------| | Shopping forwarder | Online parcels | Usually a poor fit. Often a commercial address. Letters often refused | | Residential unit from a CMRA / mail receiver | Private letters, some bills | After USPS PS Form 1583 and ID checks, closer to an address that can take financial mail |
USPS has compliance rules for commercial mail receiving. Customers usually sign and verify PS Form 1583 (Application for Delivery of Mail Through Agent). Form and notes.
Download / view PS Form 1583 (PDF)
What this step does
- Authorize a mail agent or landlord path with your real identity
- Let that address legally receive mail addressed to you
- Give later ITIN letters and bank papers a place to land
When you pick a provider, check
- Clear 1583 flow and ID check
- Scan or forward of letters (not only parcel photos)
- State and city that fit the banks you want (some firms are picky about PO BOX or very commercial-looking addresses)
- Annual fee, scan fee, and destroy rules you can live with
Once the address works, common uses
- Mail address on an ITIN application
- Home or mail address on bank and card forms (whether they accept it is the firm's call)
- Paper bills and tax-number letters
Do not use a borrowed address you cannot prove. Do not invent a door number. Fake addresses fail accounts, close them, and can create legal trouble.
3. Apply for an ITIN
#### ITIN vs SSN
| | SSN | ITIN | |--|---------|----------| | Issuer | SSA and related | IRS | | Typical person | Work or tax-resident path in the US | No SSN, but a US tax-filing need | | Official role | Social security and tax ID | ID number for tax processing only |
IRS. ITIN goes to people who cannot get an SSN, for US tax returns and similar tax uses. Details.
IRS. What is an ITIN IRS. How to apply for an ITIN
#### What it does in this stack
- Tax number. If you have US-source income or a filing need, ITIN is a common path
- Letters as papers. After official ITIN mail lands at your US address, some scenes treat it as stronger address or ID support. Whether a bank accepts it is that bank's current policy
- Account help. Some banks and card issuers accept passport plus ITIN, or passport plus other proof. No firm promises that an ITIN means an approval
#### Official apply outline
- File Form W-7 plus supporting papers
- Mail, a designated acceptance site, or an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)
- Processing time follows IRS notices that period. Often measured in weeks
When you prepare
- Passport spelling must match later bank forms
- Reason and attachments follow the W-7 instructions and the IRS page
- If you use an agent, confirm who they are and what they charge. Keep every receipt. Do not hand originals to an unknown source
4. Prepare a dedicated US IP
Remote apply pages often look at where you come from.
| Environment | Trait | Risk | |------|------|------| | Public VPN / airport node | Cheap, many people share the exit | Poor IP reputation. Bank and apply pages block easily | | Datacenter shared proxy | Low cost | Also easy to blacklist | | A US exit only you use (own VPS plus a compliant proxy setup) | Cleaner exit | You maintain it. Still a datacenter IP, not home broadband | | US residential proxy | Can look more like home broadband | Source and compliance need care. Avoid grey channels |
Practice
- For bank, broker, and card applies, stay on the same exit, same browser profile, same device
- Timezone, language, and billing address should match the form
- Do not hop country mid-apply
- A dedicated IP only lowers trip risk. It does not replace real identity papers
5. After the stack is in place, apply in this order
Once you have a US number, address, an ITIN path, and a network setup, move by need.
#### 5.1 Web and platform accounts
- Email, social, cloud, developer accounts that want a US number
- Bind the number, turn on 2FA, and back up recovery codes
#### 5.2 Bank / cash accounts (examples, not a ranked list)
Who can open, whether NRA is accepted, and whether remote works, all follow the live site. Large and online banks that come up often in community notes.
Capital One Chase Citi Charles Schwab
This site also has an Ally Bank NRA fax path for people watching a remote NRA channel.
Generic check before you apply
- Name spelling matches the passport
- Mobile can take OTP
- Address can take letters and can pass that firm's address rules
- Whether they want SSN / ITIN, W-8BEN, and similar
- Funding and monthly fee rules
#### 5.3 Credit cards and a credit file
Card review looks at identity papers, existing US credit (if any), income and debt, how many applies you just did, and the issuer model.
Networks and issuers that come up often.
American Express Capital One cards Chase cards Citi cards
Credit-build notes
- Have a working deposit or cash account before you chase many cards
- Limit hard pulls. Do not apply in a tight burst
- Pay on time in full, or keep a stable payment habit
- US score sites differ from the UK. Common US bureaus are Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion (follow the product you actually use)
- With no US file, you may need a deposit-secured card, a specific NRA product, or an in-person visit. The issuer's current product list wins
#### 5.4 Brokers and other accounts (optional)
If US stock trading is a goal, read the tax and account papers (W-8BEN and similar) on their own.
Interactive Brokers Charles Schwab
6. Suggested timeline (illustration, not a promise)
| Stage | Work | Common time scale | |------|------|----------------| | Week 1 | Pick a plan, activate a US number, confirm SMS | Days | | Weeks 1 to 3 | Address service plus 1583 checks | Depends on provider and notary | | After that | File ITIN, wait on IRS | Often weeks | | In parallel | Fix a dedicated IP and device setup | Can overlap | | After ITIN / papers | Online banks, cards, platform accounts | Varies by firm |
Any promise of a guaranteed pass in X days is not trustworthy.
Carddoger take
A remote US digital stack is four base pieces. It is not a race to many cards.
- A working major-network US number (skip virtual numbers as the primary)
- A compliant address that takes letters (1583 / CMRA, not a parcel warehouse)
- An ITIN path (official use is tax. Account help is the firm's call)
- A relatively clean US access environment (prefer an exit only you use)
When the base is stable, bank, card, and credit applications are easier to keep. Use real papers the whole way. Some firms simply will not do remote NRA. That is a real outcome.
IRS, USPS, each carrier, each financial site, and what your account shows that day win. This is a public-information note, not immigration, tax, account, card, or investment advice.
