Japan V Preca Hands-on: ¥0 Visa Virtual Prepaid, No Initial KYC, Japan Mobile Required

Life Card Japan's V Preca is a Japan-issued Visa virtual prepaid card: browser signup, ¥0 issue, optional ID at the start. We needed a 070/080/090 Japan mobile

What this covers

V Preca (Vプリカ) is Life Card Japan's Visa virtual prepaid card. You can register in the browser, issuance is ¥0, and the initial flow can skip passport / residence-card uploads. We finished email + Japan mobile SMS verification and got a Japan-issued Visa virtual number. It is not a credit card and has no credit line—you must top up before spending. The issuer also expects applicants to live in Japan. Getting a card number only proves the flow worked; it does not waive residency rules.

Before you start

  • Japan residency is an official requirement. This is a hands-on signup walkthrough, not advice to apply without qualifying residency. Fees and rules follow the live site.
  • You need a Japan mobile that receives SMS. The form accepts 070 / 080 / 090 numbers in 11-digit domestic format (leading 0). Skip 050 IP phones and 020 data-only lines; avoid throwaway SMS numbers—you may need the line again later.
  • It is prepaid, not credit: basic balance cap about ¥100,000, per-top-up cap about ¥30,000, validity roughly through the month one year after issue.
  • Overseas cards cannot top up directly. Japan-issued cards, Japan bank accounts, convenience-store charge codes, V Preca Gift, and postpay exist on paper—we have not confirmed any top-up yet.
  • The basic plan is a poor fit for recurring subscriptions; V Preca+ may help but adds identity checks.
  • From 2026-04-01, the overseas purchase handling fee is 4.5%.
  • Skipping ID at signup ≠ forever KYC-free. Odd activity, upgrades, or reviews can still request documents. Use real name, furigana, and date of birth.

Steps

1. Open the site and accept terms

Go to vpc.lifecard.co.jp and start web signup. Accept the terms (age, anti-social-force declarations, etc.), then continue.

2. Verify email

Enter a mailbox you control, receive the code, and submit it. Codes expire; use resend if needed.

3. Verify a Japan mobile number

Use a 070 / 080 / 090 11-digit domestic number (leading 0, not +81 stacked on 0). Complete SMS verification. Passing SMS only proves the number works—it does not confirm Japan residency.

The first half of signup: terms → email → email code → mobile → SMS code.

4. Pick a card design

Choose a Visa face (navy / white-pink styles are common). Design choice does not block number issuance.

5. Enter personal details

Fill name, furigana, gender, and date of birth accurately. Keep data consistent for any later KYC.

6. Confirm and finish

Review the face and profile, then submit. You land in the account dashboard.

Second half: design → profile → confirm → home.

7. View the virtual card

The home screen shows the Visa virtual card, balance, month-to-date spend, security lock, and charge entry. Mask the PAN / expiry / CVV before sharing screenshots.

8. Top-up (not verified in this guide)

A number alone is not usable balance. Official channels generally include:

  1. Japan-issued Visa / Mastercard — overseas cards are not supported for direct top-up.
  2. Japan bank account — banks listed by the issuer.
  3. Convenience-store charge codes — may sell above face value.
  4. V Preca Gift — buying a gift, loading it, and paying with a gift code are different actions.
  5. Postpay top-up — extra fees and conditions; not free credit.

We only finished signup and issuance here—no top-up path is confirmed.

9. Where it helps / where to lower expectations

More realistic: Japan e-commerce (Amazon.jp, Rakuten, etc.), some games / digital goods, and checkout that wants a Japan-issued Visa.

Lower expectations for:

  • Merchants that reject prepaid or add extra checks.
  • Long-running AI subscriptions on the basic plan.
  • FX spend after the 4.5% overseas fee from 2026-04-01.

Carddoger takeaway

V Preca fits people who already hold (or will keep) a real Japan mobile number and want a Japan-issued Visa virtual prepaid for online experiments: browser signup, ¥0 issue, optional ID at the start, and we did get a number. The missing loop is still successful top-up plus a real purchase. Overseas cards cannot fund it directly, and the basic plan is weak for subscriptions. Residency rules and later KYC still apply. Test small, then decide; follow the live official site for fees and eligibility.
